The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office announced the conviction of a former police officer by the Sviatoshynskyi District Court of the capital on charges of extortion and obtaining illegal benefits and drug trafficking. The bent copper was exposed thanks to a foreigner.
At the end of 2017, a patrol police officer in Kyiv stopped a vehicle and confiscated a driver’s license (a foreign citizen) under the pretext of detecting signs of alcohol intoxication. For returning the document and not drawing up a report on an administrative violation, the militiaman started demanding 3,500 hryvnias ($125) from the driver.
“A foreigner reported the illegal actions of a police officer to the Kyiv City Department of the Department of Internal Security (DVB) of the National Police of Ukraine. Later, under the control of DVB employees and the capital’s prosecutor’s office, the driver handed over part of the illegal benefit to the police. The latter, having received the funds, also offered the driver to buy drugs from him, namely amphetamine, the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, – said in a statement. – Under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) investigators in Kyiv and Kyiv region managed to establish an accomplice of the patrol, through whom the militiaman received and later sold drugs.”
During the trial, the policeman denied his guilt in the incriminated crimes and refused to testify. But investigators gathered enough data to sue at first instance and achieved a verdict – the accused were sentenced to 7 years in prison, with the right to hold law enforcement positions for 3 years, confiscation of all property and deprivation of the special rank of police lieutenant. His accomplice received 6 years in prison with confiscation of all property. The accused were taken into custody in the courtroom.
