The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection has analyzed the trends in the state of atmospheric air in Ukraine since January 2020.
According to ministry on its website, despite the fact that economic activity due to quarantine has significantly decreased, the ban on the use of public transport has led to increased demand for private vehicles. This affects the amount of pollutant emissions.
General trends to reduce atmospheric emissions, characteristic for all cities of Ukraine, ministry did not reveal.
Some cities show trends that may be associated with a reduced environmental burden. For example, there is a tendency to a decrease in average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in several cities of Kremenchug, Dnieper, Kryvyi Rih and Kharkov. By the way, in Kharkov and Kryvyi Rih such trends are also observed in terms of suspended solids and formaldehyde. If in Kryvyi Rih the indicators of these substances exceed the MPC (the last 2 weeks may exceed 3-4 MPC), in Kharkiv all the indicators that are monitored are within normal limits.
General indicators for Kyiv show a slight tendency to decrease in formaldehyde and sulfur dioxide and an increase in nitrogen dioxide concentrations. Moreover, these indicators exceed the MPC (formaldehyde 1.7; sulfur dioxide 2, nitrogen dioxide from 2 to 3.5).
The main sources of pollutant emissions in the spring are road transport, industry, and unauthorized burning of stubble in the fields, leaves, and even household waste.
In cities where quarantine and the situation with coronavirus significantly limit the activity of industrial enterprises, pollution reduction may be observed.
The Ministry notes that the unauthorized burning of dry grass, leaves and even household waste has not decreased in quarantine and creates additional risks for the local population.
The Ministry of Energy and Energy recalls the ban on such activities, the established fines and asks to call police in cases of offenses.
For comparison: in February 2020, satellites of NASA and the European Space Agency recorded a noticeable decrease in air pollution in China.
