On Wednesday, Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers appointed Deputy Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko as the country’s chief sanitary and epidemiological doctor.
The post of chief sanitary and epidemiological doctor was abolished as part of the medical reform in 2017. At the end of January, in article about “сoronavirus cases:“ We will be lucky if 2019-nCoV bypasses our territores ” UA-Times wrote that under this current conditions, the civilian population throughout Ukraine is deprived of the appropriate anti-epidemic protection due to the liquidation of the Institute of Chief State Sanitary Doctors, as well as the liquidation of other officials of the institutions and bodies of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine, whose functions are prescribed in the current legislation of Ukraine.
“It is the chief state sanitary doctor who will allow establishing quarantine in Ukraine in case of importation of dangerous infections ,as well as introduce restrictive anti-epidemic measures, for example, a ban on mass events, the closure of children’s and educational institutions”, deputy chief health ministry officer Viktor Lyashko said.
“The MOH is fully prepared to treat patients and provide quality assistance when needed. We now have over 2,000 infectious disease specialists, over 5,000 medical staff and some infectious disease wards used in the early stages of an epidemic or outbreak. The primary task is to prevent the virus from arrival into Ukraine”, Lyashko added.
It should be noted that no cases of coronavirus disease have been reported and detected in state. also, all agencies are ready and mobilized to prevent spread the virus. Border guards also working out all in case of detection signs of coronavirus at checkpoints.
“In the case of signs of acute viral diseases in humans, additional necessary studies will be carried out. The doctors and the state border service received all the necessary equipment and personal protective equipment,” Lyashko said.
