For the first time, The Agency for Water Resources of Ukraine can limit the rights of water. The reason for this is the abnormal fall and winter of 2019-2020.
According to the Central Geophysical Observatory, for the first time in 120 years of observations in Ukraine, “winter climatic” never came. Officials says that now the water levels in rivers and lakes are low, so in the following months there is prospect of drought, which can lead to shallowing of rivers.
The state water agency, in a post on Facebook, provides legislative grounds for restricting water use. So, article 45 of the Water Code of Ukraine says that in case of low water availability, the rights of water users may be limited or the conditions for water use can be changed, including water discharges through Kyiv’s Hydroelectric Power dam.
If such measures are taken, they will provide priority for the food and domestic needs of Ukrainians.
According to the Ukrainian Gіdrometeorologіchny Center, today on most rivers of Ukraine there is low water content. Accordingly, this year there will be no spring flooding in Ukrainian rivers. In addition, low water levels can lead to drying out of small streams.
