Ukrzaliznytsia joint-stock company provided a report on the number of road accidents at level crossings last year.
The report says that last year’s implementation was 50 cases of accidents at railway breaks and 9 – on tracks outside the crossings. The accidents clsimed 8 people, another 31 people were injured. Compared to 2019, the death toll decreased by 7 people, while 6 people were injured.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that accidents at the intersections of railway lineas and automobile roads are caused by drivers who break traffic rules. By their actions, they expose to a risk their own lives, as well as the lives and health of others. Therefore, railway workers once again urge drivers to strictly follow the rules of the road at railway crossings, which are special focus area.
In addition, the railwaymen constantly record cases of injuries of citizens, including fatal ones, due to their ignoring the rules of stay on the railway, crossing the tracks in unspecified places or while alcohol intoxicated, as well as due to carelessness.
Already in this year on January 14 at the station Odessa – Zastava I the locomotive driver of the freight train moving at a speed of 20 km/h, applied emergency brake application to prevent collision with the man lying on the track. Due to the short distance, the accident could not be prevented and the man was injured. The victim was hospitalized by ambulance to the regional hospital.
Also on the night of January 16, a man was injured at the Synelnykove station in Dnipropetrovsk region while crossing the track at a pedestrian crossing in front of a freight train traveling at a speed of 22 km/h. The driver applied emergency brake application, but the citizen’s injury could not be avoided. He received a head injury. After providing medical assistance to the victim, he refused to be hospitalized, the report said.
